The music press has been praising his musical proficiency, his fans love his melodious, harmonic and romantic style: Till Brönner is Germany’s new hot jazz star. Despite his 34 years, the trumpeter has already played with stars such as Hildegard Knef, Pat Metheny, Bootsy Collins, Mousse T., Ray Brown, the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Klaus Hoffmann, Natalie Cole or No Angels, releasing 10 albums since 1994. His current recording, That Summer, came out in June last year, entering the top 15 of the German charts immediately. Brönner was also nominated in the category “Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album” at this year’s Grammy Awards (for his collaboration on the album „Get Well Soon“ by Bob Brookmeyers New Art Orchestra). His first DVD, A Night in Berlin, is scheduled for release on September 30, 2005, recorded with other musician friends at the Berlin Teldex Studios over five days in April, with Grimme Award winner Volker Weicker in the director’s chair. The DVD will be released in a high-end format, in high definition quality and Dolby digital sound.
Alongside the 90-minute concert, A Night in Berlin features comprehensive bonus material, such as a 40-minute bonus film, a 5-minute photo gallery and an extensive discography. The internationally renowned star photographer, Jim Rakete, took pictures at the Teldex Studio show. “Creating a definitive release like a DVD was a major challenge for me. I’d always suspected that it takes a lot of courage to document the moment, irrespective of whether the conditions at the venue are perfect or not so perfect”, explains Brönner, who consciously decided to record the show without an audience to create the feeling of a very private concert for the buyers of the DVD. “I tend to watch A Night in Berlin with a grin, because I’ve discovered interesting new aspects to all the musicians involved, last but not least myself, which may also be new to our audience”, he says, adding: “I’m glad to be able to count such a successful event among the highlights of my artistic career!”
Till Brönner was born in 1971 in the German town of Viersen. He comes from a musical family and discovered the be-bop through Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker at the age of 13. “It was almost like my first erotic experience,” he says. “I couldn’t believe it was possible to be this indecent. The music was like a woman flirting with me.” Following a protected childhood and classical music training, he studied jazz trumpet at the Cologne college of music. After only three terms, he went on to impress the boss of the RIAS dance orchestra in Berlin at the tender age of 20, debuting two years later as a band leader with Generations of Jazz. His fusion jazz album, Midnight, brought his international breakthrough, Brönner playing side by side with jazz legends Dennis Chambers (drums) and Michael Brecker (saxophone). His album, Chattin With Chet, was widely acclaimed. The magazine, Jazzecho, hits the nail on head, saying: “It has long been redundant to describe Till Brönner as one of Germany’s up-and-coming trumpeters as he has probably sold more records than any other German jazz trumpeter.
